STUMPED!: It appears that Jen Rude, an openly lesbian candidate for ordination in the Sierra-Pacific Synod has stumped her candidacy committee. Throughout the candidacy process, Jen has taken a stance of principled non-compliance with respect to the ELCA's celibacy requirement. Her approval interview on October 20 is reported to have gone well and we hear that the sub-committee that interviewed her recommended approval. The whole candidacy committee, however, was unable to reach a decision, and so Jen's candidacy was neither affirmed, denied nor postponed. Perhaps the discussion will continue when the committee meets in January, 2007. In the mean time, "we have no answer." Extraordinary!. Read Jen Rude's 2004 Letter to the Candidacy Committee.

Overheard: And somewhere in the midwest, a friend of ordination candidate Megan Rohrer explained the upcomng trip to San Fransicso this way: "My friend is going to be inseminated." We hope that was meant to be "My friend in seminary is going to be ordained."

More than Two?: What is the record for simultaneous consultation committees in a synod to advise the bishop regarding clergy partnered in same-sex relationships? Which synod(s) hold that distinction?

Memo to Bishop Mullen: Are you free November 18? The invitations for Megan's ordination are out. Your presence would be a welcome sign, and a precedent was set not long ago.

    Extra Ordinem:
Ordination candidate Megan Rohrer (who is rostered with the ECP) has been called by Ebenezer Lutheran Church in San Francisco. Megan will be ordained at Ebenezer on Saturday, November 18, 2006. We hear that at least three other area churches will vote on joining Megan's call. Megan's ordination is the second ordination extra ordinem to be hosted by an ELCA church in the last four weeks. On the weekend of October 21, Erik Christensen was ordained and installed as pastor of St. Luke's - Logan Square in Chicago. Read more about Megan Rohrer's call.
