Abstract: SF Congregation returns to sanctuary after earthquake retrofit, part 1.
On Sunday, December 10, 500 members and friends crowded into St. Mark's Lutheran Church in San Francisco to celebrate the historic building's reopening and $11 million seismic renovation.
"If, God forbid, there is an earthquake today, we will be safe in here," said Bishop David Mullen.
The unreinforced masonry building was declared dangerous in 1992 andafter the congregation spent more than a decade raising money to pay for the renovaction, the church was vacated in June 2005 to make way for the 17 month project.
About 130,000 gallons of grout were injected into the sand beneath the brick footings for stabilization, and thousands more of epoxy and dowels were embedded into the old brick, church officials said.
