Revisiting Recommendation One

Abstract: WordAlone Board member questions the hermeneutics of "living together faithfully."

"Recommendation One" was the ELCA Sexuality Task Force's 2005 injunction to look for ways to "live together faithfully" in spite of our differing opinions about sexuality. The 2005 Churchwide assembly approved Recommendation One by an overwhelming margin, but recent events in the New England Synod and the Southeastern Synod have prompted the Word Alone folks to re-examine Recommendation One. WordAlone board member Pastor Scott Grorud has written up these misgivings in a recent edition of the WordAlone email newsletter. In short, Pr. Gorud smells a rat, fearing that the word "faithfully" will be construed "subjectively" and be reduced to nothing more than holding sincerely whatever position one holds. He would prefer "faithfully" to be considered "objectively", meaning faithful to God and to God's Word. Apparently it's unthinkable to Pr. Gorud that anyone could interpret "faithfully" "objectively" and still find same-sex relationships morally or theologically defensible. Note to Pr. Gorud: You might want to check the Queer Lutheran Liberation Front Manifesto.
