Scenes from a Wedding

Abstract: A report on the Hubert-Thompson nuptials in San Francisco.

Our Bay Area correspondent was present for the August 30 wedding of Brad Hubert and Martin Thompson (pictured at their reception, cutting the cake) at St. Mark's Lutheran Church (SF). About 120 people gathered for the rite of marriage and the Eucharist. Pr. Elizabeth Ekdale presided and preached. (At the reception that followed, one attendee enthused, "Was that a great sermon or what?") Lessons chosen for the occasion were Isaiah 12:1-6, Philippians 4:4-9, and John 2:1-11.
Our correspondent was surprised to encounter the vacationing Bishop Thorvald "Wally" Noe-Effingway of the Central Great Lakes Synod at the reception. It seems the bishop happened upon the service by accident.
Asked for his impression of the wedding, Bishop Noe-Effingway is reported to have said only, "I thought you had to be gay to officiate at a same-sex marriage." Apparently not.
